Attorneys at law Charlottesville, Virginia

Business formation, before you open. Contracts, before you sign. Real estate, before you buy. Estates and trusts, before it is urgent. Employment, before you hire. Disputes, before they grow.

Practice

Marlowe & Pike is a law office of two partners. Most of our work is done early, while a matter is still a question.

  1. Business formation

Choosing a form for a new company, and the papers that bring it into being. We put in writing who owns what and who decides what, while everyone still agrees.

    Led by Eleanor Marlowe

  2. Contracts

Agreements with suppliers, buyers, landlords and business partners, drafted or read line by line. We write them to be understood by the people who sign them.

    Led by Eleanor Marlowe

  3. Real estate

Buying, selling and leasing property, for a home or for a place of work. We read the contract, the title and the lease before you are bound by them, and stay with the matter to closing.

    Led by Thomas Pike

  4. Estates and trusts

Wills, trusts, powers of attorney and the administration of an estate. We put your decisions on paper in an order your family can follow.

    Led by Thomas Pike

  5. Employment

Offer letters, handbooks, agreements and the questions that come with having staff. We work for employers and for individuals, never for both in one matter.

    Led by Eleanor Marlowe

  6. Disputes

Disagreements over a contract, a boundary, an estate or a job. We begin with a letter and a conversation, and go further only when the matter needs it.

The partners

There are two of us. Whoever you speak to first is a lawyer, and the one who would do the work.

Partner

Eleanor Marlowe

  • Business formation
  • Contracts
  • Employment

Eleanor works with people who are starting a company or running one. She sets the company up, writes the agreements it lives by, and answers the questions that come with a first employee.

Her drafts are short, and the people who sign them can read them.

Partner

Thomas Pike

  • Real estate
  • Estates and trusts
  • Disputes

Thomas works on property and on what is passed from one generation to the next: purchases, leases, wills and trusts.

When a disagreement cannot be settled with a letter, he is the one who takes it further.

What to expect

The first four steps are the same for everyone.

  1. You write or call

Tell us in a few lines what has happened or what you are planning. Leave out anything confidential for now.

  2. We check for conflicts

Before we hear the details, we make sure we do not already act for anyone on the other side. We ask for names only.

  3. A first conversation

You speak with the partner who would do the work, in person or by telephone. You hear plainly whether it is something we take on.

  4. A letter of engagement

If we go ahead, a letter sets out what we will do and what we will not. Nothing begins until you have signed it.

Inquiries

Write a few lines, or call the office. One of the partners reads every inquiry.
